It’s an all-new episode of Wise Kracks sports betting podcast, with my cohost Jon Orlando.
We dive into the world of sports betting, our picks and welcome one of our most unorthodox guests ever – a San Francisco Giants fan who has been to over 600 games… in a kayak!
Betting on the Jets and Zach Wilson
New York Jets pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Zach Wilson has landed himself in the news when it was recently discovered that he was having an affair with one of his mom’s friends.
People across the internet, including his own teammates, have poked fun at the allegations, but Jon wants to know if the story will influence how people will bet on the Jets.
I hope it doesn’t interfere with his game, while Jon thinks the irony will work in the Jets’s favor and makes him want to bet on the New York team even more. Even as someone who favors the underdog, I don’t think the Jets’ will have the miracle season that Jon envisions for their future.
I sympathize with Wilson, I was into one of my mom’s friends when I was younger, you’ll have to tune in to hear the story.
UFC Fight Night and Open Championship Picks
Jon and I do discuss more than just the drama surrounding Zach Wilson, we discuss the upcoming Open Championship and the PGA Tour’s still-standing decision to suspend certain players over their participation with LIV Golf.
There’s an exciting UFC Fight Night coming down the pipeline with Brian Ortega taking on Yair Rodriguez in the main event. Who will take the victory? We make our picks.
McCovey Cove Dave’s Kayak Full of Baseballs
Our special guest this week leads an interesting life, such an interesting life I simply refer to him as “a character.” This character is McCovey Cove Dave, a San Francisco Giants baseball uber fan who has been to over 600 games… in his kayak.
Dave stakes his claim in the water surrounding Oracle Park, known as McCovey Cove, waiting for home run balls to come his way. He has what games he attends down to a science, “It’s kind of like gambling, you put your best foot forward and take advantage of the odds. If the weather is too cold, the ball won’t come out. The weather has to be just right.” His collection of well over 50 home run balls includes those from the likes of José Altuve and David Ortiz, amongst others.
Although kayaks are synonymous with leisure, I’m still curious if there’s “etiquette” out on the water; does Dave have competition, or as the kids say, haters?
“There are no written rules,” Dave proclaims sternly. “We’re like crazed kids, we’re out to get that home run ball.”
We discuss the season the Giants are having, Dave acknowledges that “They’re struggling to get a wild card position,” but the hopeful fan in him sees the potential in making the playoffs.
We wrap the interview with a peaceful agreement between, get this, a Dodgers fan and a Giants fan. We all have our say as to whether or not Barry Bonds deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. We won’t spoil the answer, but Jon punctuates it by exclaiming, “Giants fans and Dodger fans can get along!”
