Living in Las Vegas, I always am excited to see the calendar flip to fall. The desert heat starts to relent, the mass of tourists that spring and summer brings becomes more manageable, and, of course, the betting board becomes more and more robust. At the same time, there are a lot of things I miss about the East Coast autumn. Family, Food and Fall in that order. In fact, all three came together at once during the baseball playoffs. Even as the weeks and years go by, it’s amazing how certain sounds or smells can bring you back in time to a feeling from your childhood. Certain foods, like an antipasti, or sausage and peppers, put me right back at my mother’s kitchen table, waiting anxiously for the first serving.
Postseason MLB
Hearing the crack of the bat on the radio while driving in my car, transports me back to the porch, sitting with my father as he lived and died with every Yankees playoff game. And while the Boys from the Bronx bowed out in the Wildcard game, I am thrilled for playoff baseball. As much as Dodger fans may disagree, I really don’t count last year in baseball lore. From a 60-game season to an expanded 16-team playoff to a World Series played on a neutral field, it just was not the same. Playoff baseball is all about the fans, who hang on every pitch, and where the tension rises and falls all game long.
As for the action on the field, the 106-win Dodgers play the 107-win Giants in a 5-game series for the ages. This series not only marks the most combined wins by playoff opponents in MLB history but also is the first time these two bitter rivals will meet in a postseason series. It really should be epic.
