At the beginning of the NFL season, we wrote about the explosion of points on display in the prime time games. Teams opened up their passing games in the early fall, producing 50, 60, and even 70 combined points. Fast forward to December and the winter chill is settling in. Teams like the Chiefs, Cowboys, Raiders, and Ravens are now putting up 20-25 points per game. This past week saw the Washington Football Team beat the Raiders 17-15, the Chiefs beat the Broncos 22-9, and the Steelers beat the Ravens 20-19. Not to be outdone, the Patriots beat the Bills 14-10 on Monday night in windy upstate New York – a game that saw the Patriots throw the ball a total of 3 times.
Each year, as the season gets closer to the end, points are at a premium and teams that rely on their defensive game start to shine. The Rams, Titans, and Bills – three Super Bowl favorites just a month ago – are now fighting for their playoff lives, in part due to lackluster ground games. As a result, both the AFC and NFC are bunched at the top with only the Cardinals having less than 3 losses. With the extra game this year and only one bye available, the stretch run should include more meaningful games than ever before – which is exactly what the NFL was hoping for when they made those changes this offseason. It should be a hell of a run to and through the playoffs.
